No meal is complete without condiments such as ngapi (a fermented fish or prawn paste used both as an ingredient in dishes, as well as a condiment – often eaten on its own, with rice) or Balachaung (a relish made with fried onions, garlic, ginger, chili, and shrimp) So, what is Myanmar food? As in many Asian countries, rice is at the heart of a traditional Myanmar meal, whether simply accompanied by pigeon peas or a fried egg, perhaps for breakfast, or an array of richly spiced curries, vegetables & broth, more commonly eaten for lunch or dinner. Located at the crossroads of India, Bangladesh, China, Laos, and Thailand, Myanmar stretches down from the snow-capped foothills of the Himalayas in the North, through verdant forests and fertile plains bordered to the west by mile, after mile of tropical coastline, home to some of Southeast Asia’s most unspoiled beach paradises.
